Explore BrickworkHistoric masonry restoration of a 1911 Wicker Park cathedral — tuckpointing, parapet rebuilding, brick replacement, flashing and sealing.
St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral has stood in Wicker Park since 1911, and more than a century of Chicago winters had taken a toll on its brick and mortar. 312 Masonry was brought in to survey the building and carry out a full historic masonry restoration, working to preserve the cathedral’s original character while stopping ongoing water intrusion.
The scope covered tuckpointing the original brickwork with matched mortar, rebuilding sections of damaged parapet wall, and replacing brick that had spalled or failed beyond repair. New flashing went in around the windows to shed water properly, and the finished masonry was sealed with a water-repellent coating for long-term protection — restoration work done to historic-preservation standards on a landmark building still in active use.
